LSSP provides legal assistance in civil cases to low-income persons in the Charlotte area and in west-central North Carolina. We select clients and cases by the following criteria.
Financial Eligibility. LSSP provides assistance to individuals and families that meet income and assets eligibility requirements based on 200% of the federal poverty level. The actual amount depends on size of household and other factors.
In addition to the annual income requirement, the household must have non-exempt assets, including both liquid and non liquid assets, which do not exceed the annual income limit for the applicant's household; and must have liquid assets, other than those required for immediate living expenses, which do not substantially exceed the estimated cost of obtaining private legal assistance in the matter in which assistance is sought.
Case Type Priorities. The types of cases LSSP handles for all clients are listed below. LSSP may handle cases in all listed categories for clients outside of Mecklenburg County by referral from our partner Legal Aid of North Carolina.

Case Selection Criteria LSSP does not have sufficient resources to provide legal assistance to every eligible person who has a problem within LSSP case priorities. Financial eligibility is only one criterion for case acceptance. In addition to financial eligibility, LSSP staff selects those cases from among the cases presented by applicants for assistance according to the following case selection criteria:
the priority level assigned to the substantive case category in the client services plan;
the severity of impact on the applicant;
the severity of impact on other members of the client community;
the likelihood of success; and
the availability of program resources at the time the request for assistance is made.
Other Services. LSSP also provides outreach, community legal education, and advocacy services to clients, client organizations, other human services and advocacy organizations and the public. Inquire for specific
