Charles - Critical tax issues resolved after a disabling accident

After being injured in an accident, Charles* fell into a coma. Even after he awoke from his coma, he was in and out of the hospital and received months of physical therapy. Now Charles is disabled and unable to return to full-time employment. When he came to LSSP’s Western NC Low Income Taxpayer Clinic, he had not filed tax returns for several years and owed thousands in back taxes, penalties and interest, most due to no fault of his own. After weeks of gathering medical and tax information and working with the IRS, he and his pro bono attorney Beady Waddell of TIAA-CREF were able to reach a favorable settlement. Now Charles is caught up with his tax returns and will only pay small amount for the next year to satisfy his reduced liability.

“It was very rewarding to be able to bring some peace to the taxpayer for what had been a very frustrating situation for him.” – Pro bono attorney Beady Waddell
