HIV/AIDS Legal Assistance Project

The HIV/AIDS Legal Assistance Project provides direct legal services and outreach to person living with HIV/AIDS.

The program focuses on:

1. Ensuring the legal needs of persons living with HIV/AIDS are addressed where possible.

2. Educating persons living with HIV/AIDS on certain legal rights.

3. Advocating.

4. Improving the quality of lives of persons with HIV/AIDS and their families.

Case Work:

  • Simple wills, powers of attorney, health care power of attorneys and advance directives
  • Government Benefits including Medicaid and Medicare, Food Stamps, Social Security and SSI
  • Discrimination claims based on HIV/AIDS status, i.e. employment
  • Breach of confidentiality
  • Standby Guardianships
  • Immigration (where a person was previously denied because of their HIV/AIDS status)

Community Outreach

We conduct community outreach and provides community legal education, including presentations and speaking engagements, to persons living with HIV/AIDS and to the staff of other agencies.

To be eligible for services you must be diagnosed with HIV or AIDS. You must live in one of the following counties: Anson, Cabarrus, Gaston, Mecklenburg, or Union. Your gross income must not be greater than 300% of the federal poverty limits; a family size of one is $32,670.
