Employment Law

The Employment Law Program ensures that workers and their families have fair wages, reasonable benefits including health insurance and paid leave; that workers are paid what they are due; and that unemployed workers receive unemployment insurance benefits, training, job search assistance.

The program focuses on the following issues:

1) Assisting unemployed workers in receiving Unemployment Insurance benefits.

2) Ensuring that workers receive the wages they are due.

Case Work

  • Unemployment Insurance administrative and judicial appeals
  • Wage claims
  • Family and Medical Leave Act issues

The program represents low-income workers and their families in Mecklenburg County with employment related problems. Unemployment Insurance is critical to give workers time to find new work, which may require retraining, before becoming destitute. Unemployed workers who do not receive eligible benefits quickly exhaust savings and they and their families fall into debt, face eviction or foreclosure, are targets for predatory lenders, and experience homelessness, hunger and other hardship.
