Access to Justice in North Carolina

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
1.00 ethics hour (Pending Approval)

Studies reveal that parties to civil disputes have a significantly greater chance of achieving satisfactory outcomes if counsel represents them. Yet large numbers of low- and moderate- income citizens lack the financial means to hire lawyers. As such, they have no meaningful access to our justice system. This session will examine our state's access to justice crisis, will describe the efforts to address the issue-including the adoption of Rule 6.1 of the North Carolina Revised Rules of Professional Conduct- and will highlight pro bono opportunities.

Presenters: George V. Hanna III , Moore and Van Allen; Jennifer M. Lechner, Executive Director, North Carolina Equal Access to Justice Commission; Theodore O. Fillette III, Senior Managing Attorney, Legal Aid of North Carolina-Charlotte Office; Kenneth L Schorr, Executive Director, Legal Services of Southern Piedmont

Location:Foundation for the Carolinas

Rate: $20 (includes sandwich lunch)
