Charlotte nonprofits honor Bank of America Legal Department for pro bono service
Local legal aid nonprofits Legal Services of Southern Piedmont and Legal Aid of North Carolina, Charlotte recognized the Bank of America Legal Department with the 2013 Outstanding Corporate Pro Bono Service Award December 4 to honor their pro bono service for those in need in Mecklenburg County. The award was presented to the Bank of America Legal Department team at the Charlotte chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel’s annual meeting and was accepted by Bank of America Legal Department’s Ed O’Keefe, Legal Chief Operating Officer and Deputy General Counsel for Human Resources, Technology, Industry Groups and Marketing, on behalf of the pro bono team.
The Outstanding Corporate Pro Bono Service Award is an annual award presented by the LSSP-LANC Access to Justice Pro Bono Partners Program in recognition of outstanding pro bono support and service by one of its corporate partners. This year’s award is in special appreciation of the longstanding partnership LSSP holds with the Bank of America Legal Department in the nine-year running Wills on Wheels project and the department’s more recent commitment to LSSP’s Veterans Legal Services Project. In addition to serving more than 25 local, low-income seniors each year by providing free estate planning services at the annual Wills on Wheels event, the Bank of America Legal Department has shown a commitment to veterans in the Charlotte-area by providing year-round pro bono legal services to low-income veterans and also co-sponsoring the Introduction to Representing Veterans CLE in February 2013, which resulted in the recruitment of more than 70 new pro bono attorneys and paralegals to assist LSSP in serving local veterans in legal crisis.
Legal Services of Southern Piedmont’s mission is to ensure a full measure of justice for those in need, providing a wide range of civil legal assistance to eligible low-income persons in the Charlotte metropolitan area and west-central N.C. LSSP accomplishes its mission through a variety of legal advocacy strategies including individual advice and representation, community education and outreach, representation of groups, self-help remedies, collaboration with other agencies, community economic development, legislative and administrative advocacy, and impact litigation. www.lssp.org
