Legal Services of Southern Piedmont (LSSP) provides legal assistance in civil matters to low-income persons in the Charlotte area and in west-central North Carolina. Programs. LSSP offers the following programs.

The Family Support and Health Care Program assures that low-income children, the elderly, disabled persons, immigrants, and their families have access to health care and public services. In addition to its work for all low income persons, it has projects to serve special populations:
HIV/AIDS Legal Assistance Project
Disability Rights Project

The Immigrant Justice Project protects low-income, non-English-speaking Hispanic residents and immigrants of other national origins from exploitation, ensures accessibility of public services, stabilizes the immigration status of clients, and overcomes barriers preventing access to the justice system. In addition to its work in many areas of civil law, it assists immigrants with immigration law problems through the Justice For All Immigration Law Project.

The Consumer Protection Program improves financial literacy for low-income persons, preserves home ownership and home equity, provides legal assistance with predatory lending, bankruptcy, foreclosures, used car problems, unfair trade practices, warranties, debt collection and other consumer and housing matters.

The Western NC Low Income Taxpayer Clinic provides legal assistance in tax matters to eligible low-income workers and families in western North Carolina. Click here for a list of all our Tax Clinic brochures and volunteer information or click the icon below for Tax Clinic description.

Our Volunteer Lawyer Programs work with local attorneys and with the local bar to involve private lawyers in the delivery of legal assistance to low-income persons, primarily through pro bono legal work. Private attorneys also support LSSP by making financial contributions.

Board of Directors. A volunteer community Board of Directors governs LSSP. The Board includes lawyers, low-income persons and advocates for the low-income community. Click Here for a listing of our Board of Directors

Funding. LSSP receives funding from many sources including:

North Carolina State Bar Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts (IOLTA) Plan
Mecklenburg County
United States Internal Revenue Service
United Way of Central Carolinas
Regional HIV Consortium
Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina Foundation
Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation

LSSP receives no funding from the federal Legal Services Corporation.

Partnerships and Coordination. LSSP is a “Partner in Justice” with Legal Aid of North Carolina, operating in close collaboration to serve clients in this area on a day-to-day and long-term basis. LSSP also works in partnership and coordinates its services and advocacy efforts with many of the other legal services programs in North Carolina through the North Carolina Legal Services Planning Council.
